Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra issued a warning to designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee for his Mangalsutra campagin. He warned that if the advertisement is not taken down within 24 hours then the state government will take legal actions against him.
Mangalsutra is one of the wedding ornaments worn by women in India as a sign of their marital states.
Madhya Pradesh minister released a video and said that he has seen the advertisement and found it objectionable. It hurts the religious sentiments. He explained that the yellow part of the mangalsutra represents Parvati and the black part represents Shiv.
“A mangalsutra stands for conjugal happiness. I have already raised objections before. Now I am warning designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee personally and giving him an ultimatum of 24 hours,” said the Minister.
Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party-Maharastra Palghar unit legal advisor Ashutosh Dubey has already sent a legal notice to Mukherjee. He said that using semi-naked models for the advertisements of Mangalsutra is “obscene and outrageous”.
A few days ago, Sabyasachi released a collection of “Intimate Fine Jewellery” for Mangalsutra. This invited brutal trolling from social media users who asked the designer if the campaign was for Mangalsutra or innerwear.
However, this isn’t the first time when a celebrity campaign has received trolling and backlash from the people. Recently, Dabur’s Karwa Chauth showing a lesbian couple celebrating the occasion also received heavy criticism and was eventually taken down.
