Elon Musk has officially stepped down from his role as a top adviser to President Donald Trump, bringing to a close his tenure as a special government employee with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The Tesla and SpaceX CEO announced his departure on X, the social media platform he owns, offering a note of gratitude to the president while subtly signaling growing tensions.
“As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” Musk wrote. “The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.”
Yet, the timing of Musk’s exit is impossible to ignore. It came just one day after he issued a sharp critique of President Trump’s flagship legislative package—widely referred to by the president as his “big beautiful bill.” Musk, in a candid interview with CBS, did not hold back, expressing disappointment and concern over the bill’s direction.
Describing the legislation as a “massive spending bill,” Musk argued that it contradicts the very purpose of the department he was brought in to help lead. “It increases the federal deficit,” he said, and “undermines the work” of the Department of Government Efficiency.
In a tone laced with trademark irony, Musk added, “I think a bill can be big or it could be beautiful. But I don’t know if it could be both.”
President Trump, responding the following day from the Oval Office, defended his legislative efforts, acknowledging imperfections but insisting the process was far from over. “I’m not happy about certain aspects of it, but I’m thrilled by other aspects of it,” he said. “We’re going to see what happens. It’s got a way to go.”
While Musk’s exit was framed as the natural end of a scheduled term, the backdrop tells a different story—a high-profile resignation underscored by policy disagreements and philosophical divergence. As Washington braces for further debate over Trump’s legislative agenda, one of its most influential technocrats has made his disapproval known—and walked away.
