A devastating flash flood along Nepal’s Bhotekoshi River corridor has left a trail of death and destruction, with hundreds of people killed and many still missing. The latest information from Gujarat authorities says Roma Dilipbhai Intwala of Valsad, who was initially reported missing, has been contacted and is safe in Nepal. Her status has brought the number of Gujarat residents still missing down from 12 to 11.
The wider disaster has been severe. Nepalese authorities have reported that the death toll from the flash floods has risen to at least 353, with bodies being recovered from several districts.
11 People From Gujarat Still Untraceable
According to the latest status report from the Gujarat State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC), 11 people from Gujarat are currently listed as missing or untraceable. The missing persons include:
3 from Ahmedabad
3 from Surat
2 from Anand
1 from Rajkot
2 from Amreli and Mehsana, who are foreign citizens of Indian origin
Authorities had initially received information about 12 Gujarat residents who could not be contacted after the floods. Their relatives approached the SEOC and district emergency centres after losing contact with them.
The situation changed after officials managed to contact Roma Dilipbhai Intwala from Valsad and confirmed that she was safe in Nepal.
Several Were Travelling Towards Kailash Mansarovar
According to the official information, several of the missing Gujarat residents were travelling towards the Kailash Mansarovar region through Nepal.
Others were reportedly last known to be in the Rasuwagadhi-Kerung border area, particularly around the Friendship Bridge and the Bhotekoshi River.
This region has been badly affected by the sudden flooding, making communication, transportation and rescue operations difficult.
Floods Cause Widespread Destruction in Nepal
The disaster struck Nepal’s Rasuwa district, where a sudden and powerful flood swept through areas along the Bhotekoshi River corridor.
The flood damaged or destroyed bridges, roads and other infrastructure and affected communities living along the river.
The destruction has extended beyond Rasuwa. Bodies have also been recovered from neighbouring districts, including Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitwan, Tanahun, Gorkha and Nawalparasi East.
