| Updated: May 27, 2024 11:02

The police have asked for DNA samples from the parents of the couple to confirm their identity

The fire incident at a gaming zone in Gujarat’s Rajkot, in which at least 27 people were killed, also claimed the lives of a newly-married couple and the woman’s sister.

Akshay Dholaria, who was studying in Canada, and his wife Khyati Svaliwea were celebrating their court marriage at Rajkot’s TRP Game Zone on Saturday evening, along with Khyati’s sister Harita, when the massive fire broke out.

According to Akshay’s family members, a grand wedding of the duo was scheduled according to the Hindu rituals in December this year. After the incident, Akshay’s parents, who live in the US, left for Rakot. The police have asked for the DNA samples from the victim’s parents to confirm their identity.

Toll likely to rise

The fire claimed the lives of four children under the age of 12. According to the officials, the  toll is likely to go up. The police have detained the owner and manager of TRP Game Zone. The state government has assigned the probe to a Special Investigation Team.

So far the death of 27 persons in the fire incident have been confirmed by police sources. They say the bodies are charred beyond recognition and hence their identification is difficult.

President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the incident.

Modi spoke to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel to enquire about the rescue and relief efforts.
