Night-Vision CCTVs To Be Fixed Ahead Of Rath Yatra

| Updated: May 16, 2024 10:25

Residential and commercial complexes will need to comply

Residential and commercial complexes are required to install high-quality, night-vision CCTV cameras in the first stage of the Gujarat Public Safety Act’s implementation. This will be overseen by the city crime branch.

The Act, introduced in April 2022, will be fully implemented by July 7, the data of Lord Jagannath’s Rath Yatra, according to sources.

The wider CCTV network will help identify lawbreakers, particularly during festive periods, ensuring that innocent individuals or groups are not wrongfully accused. A similar public safety law was first implemented in Hyderabad, Telangana, before being adopted in Gujarat in April 2022.

The Act is focused on securing the safety of citizens, particularly women, children, and senior citizens, said police sources. Locating missing children is a major objective.

Mandatory provision

In the first phase, all commercial complexes and business entities must install night-vision CCTV systems covering both interior and exterior areas, ensuring footage is stored for at least 30 days. The police will monitor compliance rigorously.

The law enforcement agencies may request residential and commercial complexes for CCTV footage at any time. Failure to provide this can result in penalties.

The Act intends to cover the city with CCTV coverage to control crime and empower citizens. Public places with higher than 100 visitor footfalls will be equipped with cameras to maintain security and assist in emergencies.
