As devastating floods affected several parts of Navsari district following days of heavy monsoon rain, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) from South Gujarat have come together to support families struggling in the aftermath. Gujarati communities living in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Gulf countries have raised funds and sent essential relief materials to help those affected by the disaster.
The overseas initiative has provided timely financial assistance, food supplies, medicines and shelter materials to villages located near the swollen Purna and Kaveri rivers, where thousands of people were impacted by flooding.
Global Gujarati Community Responds Quickly
Soon after floodwaters entered residential areas and damaged roads, homes and public infrastructure, NRI groups and alumni networks launched online fundraising campaigns to help people back home. The campaign received support from Gujaratis living in cities such as London, Leicester, New Jersey and Dubai.
Instead of waiting for lengthy processes, the diaspora worked closely with local NGOs and village volunteers to ensure that relief reached affected families as quickly as possible.
The collected funds have been used to provide dry ration kits, clean drinking water, hygiene kits, blankets, tarpaulins and other basic necessities to people who were forced to leave their homes due to the floods.
Relief Efforts Now Focus On Health And Recovery
As floodwaters begin to recede in many areas, the focus has shifted from emergency relief to rehabilitation and healthcare. Volunteers supported through NRI donations have started distributing disinfectant kits in flood-affected villages to reduce the risk of diseases that often spread after floods.
Mobile medical camps are also being organised in the worst-hit areas to provide healthcare services and help prevent water-borne and vector-borne diseases.
Support For Schools, Farmers And Small Businesses
Community representatives said the next phase of the fundraising campaign will focus on helping families rebuild their lives. Plans include repairing damaged primary schools, supporting small farmers whose crops were destroyed during the floods, and helping local shopkeepers restart their businesses.
The rehabilitation programme aims to provide long-term assistance to communities that suffered major losses due to the heavy rains.

The relief initiative highlights the strong connection that the South Gujarat diaspora continues to share with its native villages. Even while living overseas, thousands of NRIs came together during this difficult time to provide immediate assistance and stand by their communities.
