‘Punishment These Terrorists Would’Ve Never Even Thought About’: PM Modi Reacts To Pahalgam Attack

| Updated: April 24, 2025 15:57

In his first and strong response to the terror assault in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 26 people, Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised that the attackers and those responsible for the devastation would receive a punishment they could never have imagined.

The attack killed 26 people in the Baisaran meadows in Pahalgam on April 22.

During a rally in Madhubani, Bihar, PM Modi switched from Hindi to the English language to deliver his message, telling the world that India will not spare those who try to crush the country’s spirit.

Calling it an attack on India’s soul, the PM said, “India will identify, track and punish every terrorist and their backers.”

“Today, on the soil of Bihar, I say to the whole world, India will identify, trace and punish every terrorist and their backers. We will pursue them to the ends of the Earth. India’s spirit will never be broken by terrorism.”

“The entire nation is one in this resolve. Everyone who believes in humanity is with us…The punishment will be significant and stringent, which these terrorists would have never even thought about..,” he said.

The incident, which sent shockwaves across the nation, was claimed by the Resistance Front (TRF), a branch of the Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba.

PM Modi shortened his stay in Saudi Arabia and left for New Delhi early on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the government announced a five-pronged diplomatic campaign on Pakistan after India’s PM presided over a Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting following the incident.

India declared that the Indus Waters Treaty will be suspended until Pakistan renounces its support for cross-border terrorism in a credible and irreversible manner. Pakistani diplomats in Delhi have been declared persona non grata, the Attari-Wagah check post has been closed, and the strength of the corresponding High Commissions has been reduced.

Furthermore, the Saarc visa exemption programme will not allow Pakistani nationals to enter India.
