Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday assured party district presidents in Gujarat that their views would be considered while selecting candidates for upcoming elections.
Addressing a training camp under the party’s Sangathan Sujan Abhiyan (Organisation Strengthening Campaign), Gandhi—Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha—criticized the Election Commission, accusing it of bias, and emphasized the strategic importance of defeating the BJP in its home state of Gujarat.
The camp, held at a resort near Anand, has been organised for newly-appointed District Congress Committee (DCC) presidents ahead of the 2027 Gujarat Assembly elections. It will conclude on July 28 and is aimed at laying the groundwork for “Mission 2027.”
“Rahul Gandhi reassured the district presidents that the leadership stands firmly with the grassroots workers,” said Gujarat Congress chief Amit Chavda.
According to Rajkot DCC president Rajdeepsinh Jadeja, Gandhi urged leaders to focus on people-centric issues and confirmed that local leaders would be consulted when finalising candidates.
In a striking analogy, Gandhi compared the Election Commission to a “biased umpire,” explaining the Congress’ recent electoral setbacks. “In cricket, when you keep getting out, you start to doubt yourself—until you realise the umpire is the problem,” said Surendranagar DCC chief Naushad Solanki, quoting Gandhi. He alleged that discrepancies in the voter list cost Congress the 2017 Gujarat elections.
Gandhi also stressed the symbolic and strategic value of defeating the BJP in Gujarat. “Earlier, we focused on states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. But if we can win in Gujarat, the BJP can be beaten anywhere,” Solanki quoted him as saying.
Gandhi also met leaders from the cooperative sector and dairy farmers associated with various milk unions. The meeting comes in the wake of protests outside Sabar Dairy in Himmatnagar over milk procurement prices.
The Congress recently appointed new DCC presidents across Gujarat as part of its broader effort to revamp and energize its organisation at the grassroots level ahead of the 2027 elections.
