A farmer in Rajkot district has died by suicide amid financial hardship, police reported on Saturday. The man, identified as Jesingbhai Makwana, 45, was a resident of Sardhar village, located approximately 30 kilometres from Rajkot city.
Aji Dam police have registered the case as an accidental death.
Makwana’s family stated that he had been troubled over crop losses in recent days, and his health deteriorated after he ingested a toxic substance. He was initially admitted to a private hospital before being transferred to Rajkot Civil Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Makwana’s elder brother, Babubhai, described his late brother’s situation, saying, “We were three brothers. Jesing managed our family’s two-acre plot, while my other brother and I work as labourers. He had planted groundnut and coriander but faced repeated losses due to unseasonal heavy rains. He was visibly distressed over the last few days.”
However, Head Constable Digpalsinh Jadeja from Aji Dam Police Station dismissed crop failure as the cause of Makwana’s suicide, attributing it instead to broader financial distress.
Makwana is survived by his wife and two sons.
