Sanjay leela Bhansali’s feature film staring Alia Bhatt as “Gangubai Kathiawadi” has released and is receiving mixed reviews from film critics all across the nation.

The film is based on the real life story of courtesan of Mumbai who was allegedly involved in drug trafficking and was considered the diva of Mumbai Underworld in 60s era.

Short summary of the life of Gangubai Kathiawadi

Born as Ganga Harjivandas in Saurashtra region of Gujarat, Ganga ran away with her lover Ramnik Lal to Mumbai from her home to pursue her career as a film actress but ended up starving herself on the ruthless streets of Mumbai. The biggest tragedy of her life was that her lover and her husband whom she married in an early age Ramnik Lal himself became her suitor sold her into prostitution.

Soon ganubai became prominent figure in Red light area of mumbai Kamathipura because of her looks and she was regulary visited by underworld mafias as her customer, She soon came in acquaintance of Underworld don Karim Lala, in those era Karim Lala was most powerful mafia don of the mumbai city and Kamathipura was under his territory.

Gangubai soon became close ally of Karimlala came as she made Karim lala her brother. She soon started ruling Kamathipura and got herself titled by queen of Kamathipura. Her immense power grew as she always looked upon the betterment of sex workers and orphan kids of the Kamathipura. Moreover, she was an opinionated lady also took strong stand and she stood up for the rights of women who were sold into the work prostitution in Kamathipura. Gangubai also met prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru and he assured to look into her proposal of protecting the red light areas in Mumbai.
