A day after the alleged Ricin terror plot accused Ahmed Mohiyuddin Saiyed (Jilani) was injured inside Sabarmati Central Jail, Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi said the clash appeared to stem from anger among inmates who believed he had “betrayed the nation” and carried out “anti-national activities despite taking benefit of government schemes.”
The main accused was reportedly attacked by three undertrial inmates on Tuesday, barely a day after he was moved to the high-security jail under judicial custody. Sanghavi said the assailants told officials they were enraged because, in their view, those who had “taken benefits of the country’s schemes” were still involved in activities against the nation.
According to Sanghavi, Saiyed suffered injuries to his eyes caused by his spectacles during the scuffle. He said the information was preliminary and a detailed inquiry report would follow. He added that ATS had recently arrested individuals involved in “desh drohi and terrorist activities.”
A news report mentioned that the Gujarat ATS had earlier arrested Saiyed and two others for allegedly trying to extract Ricin from castor beans in what investigators described as a plan for a “major terror attack.” Saiyed is from Hyderabad, Telangana.
City crime branch officials are probing the alleged jail assault.
The report added that an FIR was filed at Ranip police station based on Saiyed’s complaint. The accused in the assault case are undertrials Anil Kumar, booked in a murder case at Kagdapith; Shivam Sharma, facing a murder case at Amraiwadi; and Ankit Lodhi, booked under the POCSO Act. They face BNS sections 115(2), 117(2), and 54.
In the FIR, Saiyed said he was sitting in his barracks while his co-accused were asleep when three men walked past, left, and returned about 10 minutes later to attack him. He said he was hit in one eye and shouted for help, after which the men fled. Jail staff then took him to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital.
On November 8, ATS booked Saiyed, Azad Suleman Sheikh of Shamli, Uttar Pradesh, and Mohammad Suhail Mohammad Saleem Khan of Lakhimpur Kheri, along with wanted accused Abu Khadija of Afghanistan, under UAPA, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and the Arms Act. All three were arrested the same day.
