Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said that if the party has to defeat the BJP and the RSS in the country then the road goes through Gujarat.
He was addressing the district party workers’ convention in Modasa, Arvalli district. The engagement was part of the Congress’ “Sangathan Srujan Abhiyan”. The initiative is aimed at strengthening the party at the district level and the grassroots by giving more powers to the district Congress committees and the district party presidents.
The party has selected Gujarat for the pilot project and Modasa as the district under it. On Tuesday, Gandhi had addressed senior Congress leaders and observers at the Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan in Ahmedabad. Five observers , including one appointed by the Central Party, will go to each district. New district party presidents will be selected from the names that are given to them by the local leaders and party workers. The entire process will be completed by May 31.
“We are demoralised since years. But it is not difficult. We will do it in Gujarat. Our party started from Gujarat,” Gandhi said while referring that Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel hailed from this state. He emphasised that the Congress should return to its original foundation.
He told the gathering that the districts will be run from the districts and the district party president will be given more responsibilities. He made it clear that the district president won’t be a compromise candidate and he would run the district with your (workers’) help. Gandhi said he is aware that local voices are not heard when it comes to ticket distribution.
The former Congress president once again referred to “marriage horses” and “race horses” and stressed the need to separate them. He also said he would like to add a new horse “langda” (lame) horse.
He made it clear that those who are not even able to help the party win a booth won’t be given opportunities. “We want to promote those having a grip over the booth and who are connected with the masses. We want to promote them and give power,” Gandhi added.
Trying to appreciate the work of the party workers, he said he is aware about what they (party workers) have to undergo and yet they keep the party flag flying high.
Urging the party workers that there is a need to bring in the new generation in the party, he also pointed out that there are people in the Congress who “are with the BJP”. “They need to be removed with love,” he added.
Replying to a suggestion from a woman party worker that more women should be given positions, the Congress leader said it would be done. “I saw that not a single woman is a district party president. This is not acceptable,” he said, adding that there will be more social balance.
Later in Ahmedabad, Congress workers protested against the ED’s move of filing a chargesheet against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case.
