A senior staffer at the Vastral Regional Transport Office (RTO), who also served as the chief cashier, stands guilty of siphoning off over Rs 1 crore meant for the government treasury. The embezzlement came to light when the authorities noticed some irregularities during stock taking.
Senior employee M.N.Prajapati, was in charge of depositing money from cash transactions into the state coffers. In March, representatives from the Gandhinagar Transport Commissionerate paid a visit to the RTO to investigate possible financial embezzlement. Prajapati was relieved of his additional position of chief cashier after an investigation pointed failure of the RTO to deposit Rs 1.83 crore over three financial years (from 2019 to 2022).
Later, when questioned by the ARTO, Prajapati admitted to his fraud, adding that he deposited only Rs 23.81 lakhs in the government account. The Vastral RTO filed a FIR against him, following which he was arrested by the Ramol police.
