| Updated: August 22, 2025 13:50

Following the death of a 15-year-old Seventh Day Adventist Higher Secondary School student, Nayan Santani, who was stabbed in the stomach by a juvenile, the Crime Branch has filed a lawsuit against the school, claiming it was negligent and had failed to respond appropriately in an emergency.

With Gujarat shocked and stirred, outrage followed. Demonstrations at the school descended into violence, leading to extensive vandalism, property damage, and staff attacks. Investigators are now seriously considering legal action in response to this escalation.

Nearly 500 people gathered on the school grounds. They accused the administration and teachers of failing to act promptly.

Incidents of vandalism and assault were reported across the campus.

The Gujarat State Commission of Protection of Rights has also asked for a report on the incident that has shaken the state. Commission chairperson Dharmishta Gajjar was quoted as saying, “It is natural for people to be angry over such an incident. We have learnt that an FIR has been registered. We have asked the school to submit a report about the incident. We will take action based on the report.”

Late Wednesday night, the school administration filed a complaint with the Khokhra police against the group involved in the violence.

The FIR, marked as “sensitive” by police, was lodged by Mayurika Patel, a staff member with 35 years of service at the school. In her statement, she said that the mob barged into the school compound, vandalised property, and assaulted staff members.

Patel detailed in her complaint that the crowd damaged seven CCTV cameras, windows, eight school buses, a car windshield, seven smart TVs, and seven smart boards. The total estimated damage was pegged at Rs 15 lakh. She also mentioned that several staff members were physically assaulted during the rampage.

She called on authorities to conduct a comprehensive legal probe against those responsible for the unruly episode. She reportedly said that the probe might be aided by a large number of witnesses and school personnel. According to the latest reports, the police have opened an official investigation and filed a case in response to the complaint.

Meanwhile, as investigation deepens on the recent violence at the school, the Crime Branch has initiated legal action against its administration.

It has emerged that officials are in the process of obtaining permission from the court to proceed against the school management.

According to a report by a national daily, the Crime Branch has decided to make the school an accused in the case.

A complaint was filed against the school. The details include major lapses by the administration in handling the volatile situation. The report said that among the charges, the school was guilty of exhibiting extreme carelessness that resulted in the situation spiraling out of control.
