Several pre-schools across Gujarat are facing the prospect of closure due to the lack of a registered rental agreement.
The Education Board has made it mandatory for pre-schools to register themselves for which they have to submit a registered rental agreement. The objective is to ensure that they will be better regulated.
Many pre-schools operate out of rented premises including shops and other premises. Most of the rental agreements are for 11 months, for which registration is not mandatory, and hence pre-schools are finding it difficult to show a registered rental agreement.
Fewer applications
The process to register the pre-schools in the state began in February. The requirement of a registered rental agreement has resulted in fewer applications from pre-schools to get themselves registered. Some have protested against this requirement.
Also, the recent decision to raise the age limit for admission to Class 1 in state schools has encouraged the establishment of kindergartens for children over five years.
Meanwhile, the Directorate of Primary Education has stressed on the importance of adherence to the registration requirements.
