Soft Hindutva Is Not Our Ideology, We Welcome Everyone: Shashi Tharoor In Gujarat

| Updated: October 12, 2022 19:24

Congress presidential election candidate Shashi Tharoor on  Wednesday visited Ahmedabad, Gujarat to campaign for the upcoming poll to the top party post. Tharoor began his visit by paying tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at the Sabarmati Ashram.

On this occasion, Shashi Tharoor said “If I become party president I would want to emphasise that we are not here for soft Hindutva. We welcome people from all backgrounds, all areas, and all mazhab. This is what Congress stands for.”

“Earlier no political party has ever held such an election within their party and I think here, there is a lesson for BJP. They should also organise such elections. Most times, people or in fact, party members do not know on what grounds a member is given a specific post. No explanation is given for any appointments.” adds Tharoor.

Shashi Tharoor released his 10-point manifesto for the Congress presidential election on October 7. “My message is to revive the party, re-energize it, empower workers, decentralise authority and be in touch with the people. This, I believe, will make Congress politically fit to take on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his BJP in the 2024 general election,” Tharoor said.

Decentralising powers, strengthening the party at the booth level, utilising general secretaries for nation-building activities while dispensing their services as state in-charges, and trusting state presidents by giving them a free hand in decision-making besides limiting their term of office, are among the 10 points highlighted in the manifesto.

Earlier veteran leader Mallikarjun Kharge –who is also in the race for the party president’s post– visited Gujarat to campaign for the election which is scheduled on October 17. The result will be announced on October 19.

“Whether Kharge wins or I, ultimately, it is the victory of Congress.” Tharoor said.
