| Updated: June 7, 2024 14:18

A one-year-old infant was brutally attacked by a stray dog at a construction site near Kadodara-Palsana road on Monday afternoon. The child named Gunjan was sleeping peacefully in his cradle, was dragged out by the dog and suffered severe bites to his face and head.

Gunjan’s parents, Mohanbhai Rasoolbhai Madi and his wife, who both work and reside at the construction site near the SR Petrol Pump on Kadodara-Palsana road, were alerted to the horrifying scene. Along with other residents, they rushed to save their child from the vicious dog.

Due to the severity of his injuries, Gunjan was immediately transported to the Surat Municipal Institute of Medical Education & Research (SMIMER) hospital via a 108 ambulance. Upon arrival, resident doctors Dr. Priyam Shah and Dr. Jeel provided initial treatment in the emergency department, administering a rabies injection and immunoglobulin to the young boy. A CT scan was also performed to assess the damage to his face and brain.

A team of surgeons and plastic surgeons, including Dr. Isha Arora, made the decision to operate on Gunjan that same evening. Despite their best efforts during the four-hour surgery, the severity of Gunjan’s injuries necessitated the removal of his right eye.

Gunjan is currently in the ICU for further treatment and observation.
