Surat: Spurned By Canada- Based Child, Parents End Life

| Updated: May 9, 2024 09:54

Surat residents Chunibhai Gediya, 66, and his wife Mukta, 64, took the extreme step of taking their own lives, feeling abandoned by their Canada-based son Piyush. The elderly couple left an emotional suicide note expressing their anguish, mental trauma and feeling of having failed in life.

Chunibhai and Mukta expressed their agony in the letter mentioning that their son not only failed to offer them any financial support but also stopped returning their calls. The parents claim that they suffered heavy financial losses to the tune of Rs. 40 lacs, to support their son in Canada.

Piyush, the son accused of having turned his back on his parents, apparently did not contact them for four years. The parents had sent him money to cover the financial losses he incurred in Canada. Chunibhai had borrowed heavily from his relatives.

The sense of neglect and humiliation seem to have intensified for the couple when Piyush did not care to visit them when he visited Surat from Canada. Piyush’s wife, Payal, too, had a public altercation with the couple, adding insults to the elderly couple. In the suicide note, the heartbroken parents asked their son not to cremate their bodies.

The point of view of Piyush, the son, about the issue could not be obtained as yet. It is also not clear if Piyush had started earning enough to be able to support back or pay back to his parents. It is pertinent to note that many Indian immigrants in Canada are facing financial hardships and joblessness.
