Tamil Nadu To Shut Down 500 Liquor Shops Across State

| Updated: June 21, 2023 19:24

The state-run Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation announced on Wednesday that 500 retail liquor outlets in Tamil Nadu will stop functioning from June 22.

The decision, initially reported by former Excise Minister V Senthil Balaji in April, is being implemented based on a government order issued on April 20, 2023, under the direction of Chief Minister M K Stalin.

To comply with the government order, the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation has been instructed to identify and shut down 500 retail outlets across the state starting tomorrow. A statement from the corporation confirmed that these placed outlets would cease their operations as of June 22.

This move is part of the government’s efforts to regulate the sale of liquor and potentially curb its consumption in the state. The closure of these state-run outlets aims to address concerns related to alcohol availability and its impact on public health and well-being.

Closing these 500 retail liquor outlets marks a significant step in the state government’s commitment to implementing measures to regulate the liquor industry. It remains to be seen how this decision will impact the overall availability and consumption patterns of alcoholic beverages in Tamil Nadu.
