The All India Congress Committee (AICC) announced a huge list of office bearers for the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee on Thursday, ahead of the December assembly elections (GPCC).
There are up to 75 general secretaries and 25 vice presidents on the list. It also includes 19 Congress members who had been appointed as presidents of district Congress committees. This is the initial list, over 250 secretaries are likely to be appointed in the upcoming days.
This is the new GPCC structure. The previous one was abandoned two and a half years ago. It had nearly 500 members on its board of directors. Once all of the appointments are made, the new structure may come close to that number.
Former MP and All India Youth Congress president Satyajit Gaekwad is among the well-known names on the list. He has been named vice-president of the GPCC. Another Congress leader, Vijay Dave, who participated in the 2017 Gujarat Assembly elections from Ahmedabad’s Ellisbridge constituency and lost to BJP’s Rakesh Shah, has been nominated vice-president of the GPCC. Dave has lately brought up the topic of a big number of Congress MLAs leaving the party.
Geniben Thakor, who defeated BJP’s Shankar Chaudhary in her first election in 2017 from Banaskantha’s Vav constituency, is also among the newly elected vice-presidents.
Indranil Rajaguru, a Rajkot Congress politician who fought against then-chief minister Vijay Rupani in the 2017 elections, has also been named a vice president. This is the new and effective Congress team in Gujarat, poised to take on the task of the 2022 assembly elections. Both young and experienced party members are on the list, stated GPCC spokesperson Manish Doshi.
