Thunderstorms swept through Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) this morning, but while it relieved the capital from the unyielding heatwave, the rain and gusty winds left behind a trail of tragedy.
The storm claimed the lives of a 26-year-old woman and her three young children when a tree crushed their house. The woman’s husband survived with injuries. Police rushed to the Kharkhari Nagar village in Jafarpur Kalan at 5:26 am after receiving a distress call.
Their bodies have been sent for postmortem, and an investigation is underway.
“We received a call regarding a house collapse in Kharkari Nahar village in Najafgarh at 5.25 am. We deployed multiple teams on the spot and four people were rescued from the rubble,” a Delhi Fire Services official was quoted as saying. “We have informed the police about the matter,” he added.
The early-morning storm caused mayhem in the capital, as roads were submerged, aircrafts were left grounded, and traffic jammed. Reports claimed that at least three planes were diverted and over 100 flights were delayed at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.
IndiGo said in a statement that the thunderstorms have impacted flight operations. ‘We’re monitoring the situation closely and are hopeful for a return to normalcy soon,’ the airline said in a post on X.
