Two Covid Deaths In Ahmedabad, Cases In India Near 4000 Mark

| Updated: June 2, 2025 15:02

An 18-year-old pregnant woman succumbed to Covid in Ahmedabad on Monday even as the number of active coronavirus cases in India neared the 4000 mark, with Delhi reporting the highest single-day increase of 47 new cases, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare revealed.

A resident of Vinzol area of Ahmedabad, she was admitted to the L G Hospital two days ago due to respiratory issues. She then tested positive for Covid and died on Monday.

Furthermore, a 47-year-old woman from Danilimda, reportedly suffering from hypertension, died in the L G Hospital a couple of days ago due to Covid. However, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is alleged to have hidden the fact. The AMC authorities confirmed the death only on Monday.

Meanwhile, latest reports indicate that Delhi recorded 203 new cases.

The national capital also reported one more Covid-related death, taking its total number of fatalities to four. The victim, a 22-year-old woman, had a lung condition.

One death each was reported in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra.

Tamil Nadu reported the death of a 25-year-old man with bronchial issues. In Maharashtra, a 44-year-old man died, while details about the fatality in Kerala are still awaited.

Kerala remains the worst-affected state with 1,435 active Covid-19 cases. It is followed by Maharashtra with 506, Delhi with 483, West Bengal with 339, and Gujarat with 338.

The Covid-19 situation in India is being closely monitored by authorities. Central government sources, according to reports, said that there is no cause for panic yet.

Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), said that genome sequencing of samples from the western and southern regions of the country has shown that the current surge in cases is driven by subvariants of Omicron. These variants are “not associated with severe illness.” Four subvariants have been identified — LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and NB.1.8.1 — with the first three being more common, he added.
