Securing a spot in the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is a popular dream of a large section of the Indian youth. The competition is extremely tough and very few make it through.
Meet Pranay Machchi, a 17-year-old rickshaw driver’s son from Vadodara, who not only battled life’s adversities to get a seat at IIT-Goa but also cracked the world’s second toughest exam – JEE (advanced) – without ever being able to afford any private coaching.
Pranay had always dreamt of becoming an engineer. But forget the expensive coaching class, bearing education fees itself was a daunting task for the family which could hardly make the ends meet.
To achieve his dream, Pranay relied solely on self-study and online resources. “Everyone said I would need full-time coaching to pass the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) as lakhs of students appear for it. My family couldn’t afford the tuition fees so I decided to go at it alone. I worked hard, believed in myself, and succeeded in cracking one of the toughest exams in the country,” he said.
Panay who scored 86% in his Class 12 board exams, began preparing for the JEE in Class 11 while studying at Baroda High School (BHS) in Danteshwar.
He relied on online resources and the support of his school and the Mahavir Foundation to navigate the challenging entrance exam studies.
“Of course, the entrance exam studies were tough, but I got the support from my school as well as Mahavir Foundation. I used to study online for JEE preparations,” he said.
Pranay’s father Bharat wasn’t sure if he could help fulfill his son’s dream, given the family’s financial situation.
