Vadodara: Cybercrooks Steal Money From Bank Accounts Without OTP

| Updated: January 11, 2023 12:59

Cybercrime investigators have found a few reports where victims lost lakhs to con men in a matter of minutes. The instances have sparked worries about the security of online banking, which is widely utilised by both consumers and business people.

Hardik Makadia, Assistant Commissioner of police (cybercrime) said, “As per the complaint, an unknown account got added as a beneficiary in the victim’s netbanking account. The victim didn’t initially pay attention as he felt there must be some error.”

To prevent the victim from receiving OTP, cyber criminals typically disconnect and switch the victims’ sims. The police have previously uncovered gangs that would steal the victims’ identity documents and then request to have their SIM cards disconnected. Then, in order to steal money, the scammers purchased new sim cards in the victims’ names and linked them to their net-banking accounts.

“But after some time, lakhs were transferred from the victim’s account to the conman’s bank account. Interestingly, the victim didn’t get OTP to approve the addition of the beneficiary. We received three such complaints of beneficiaries getting added without approval in the city,” he added.

Users of online banking were advised by the police to regularly monitor the beneficiaries of their accounts. Delete any accounts that aren’t frequently utilised for transactions.
