| Updated: May 28, 2025 18:09

Elections for the 8,326 village panchayats will be held on June 22, the Gujarat State Election Commission announced in Gandhinagar on Wednesday.

Dr. S. Murli Krishna, state election commissioner, said that the notification for the polls will be issued on June 2.

The village panchayat elections are not held on party symbols.

The last date to file the nominations is June 9. Scrutiny of the forms will be done on June 10 and the last date to wtihdraw the nominations is June 11.

Ballot papers will be used for voting.

This is for the first time that village panchayat polls will be held after the implementation of 27 percent reservation for the OBC.

The Congress in Gujarat welcomed the annoucement of the date for village panchayat elections. Dr. Manish Doshi, chief spokesperson of the Gujarat Congress, said that the panchayats will get rid of the administrators’ rule.

There has been a delay of over three years in holding the elections. The election process was delayed due to deliberations on increasing OBC reservation from 10 percent to 27 percent in the Village Panchayat rotation system. The state government formed the Zaveri Commission and passed a related law in the Assembly. However, due to the incomplete implementation of the procedures, elections were postponed.
