Gujarati-Origin, daughter of a warehouse worker Humaira Garasia has become the youngest civic mayor in the Uk at age 25. Humaira, having a BA degree from the University of London, become the youngest Speaker in the London Borough of Hackney.
Humaira’s parents migrated to the UK 35 years ago. Humaira’s father Rafiq Ahmed hails from Nanataiwad village in the Valsad district of Gujarat. Her mother Najma, a housewife comes from Bharuch. Humaira was interested in politics from the age of 15 and wanted to represent the marginalized population.
Humaira was elected at the age of 21 as a councillor from Haggerston, London in 2018 and completer a four-year term. She was also the youngest councillor of Indian origin then. Humaira is re-elected as councillor again in May 2022.
Humaira Garasia expressed her desire to work for the most vulnerable members of society focussing on the areas of inequality, racism and discrimination. She wants young people to feel both” empowered and safe.”
