A 19-year-old girl, Ankita Singh hailing from Dumka district located in India’s eastern Jharkhand state was burnt alive by an alleged stalker. The girl eventually succumbed to death on Sunday, August 28, 2022.

Aspiring to become a police officer and lifting her career to heights, her hopes were all smashed on an ill-fated night when she was set ablaze by an alleged stalker named Shahrukh Hussain.

She took her last breath and succumbed to her injuries in the early hours of Sunday morning, August 28.

While breathing her last, Ankita shared, “He called me again around 8 pm on Monday (August 22) and told me that he would kill me if I did not talk to him. I informed my father about the threat, after which he assured me that he would talk to the man’s family on Tuesday (August 23).”

“After having our dinner, we went to sleep. I was sleeping in another room. On Tuesday morning, I experienced a sensation of pain in my back and could smell something burning. I found him running away when I opened my eyes. I started screaming in pain and went to my father’s room. My family members doused the fire and took me to the hospital,” she gave her statement to the police.

According to the sources, Ankita had mentioned that the accused Shahrukh had called on her mobile a few days back, forcing her to become his friend to which Ankita had utterly objected.

The Nineteen-year old dreamer Ankita and her family were dealing with a huge financial crisis after her mother’s death from cancer. Her father had to sell their land and property to avail cash for her mother’s treatment.

The sources also confirmed that Ankita’s father was a daily-wager earning a sum of INR 200 per day. To come out of their financial conditions and to pay for their daily expenses, she gave tuitions to local children nearby.

A family of three- Ankita, her father and her younger sibling studying in standard 6 were living in a two-room house in Dumka.

Sources also maintained that Shahrukh allegedly poured the inflammable fuel over her through the window of her room, when she was asleep.

Meanwhile, the accused has been taken to the police custody.

Chief Minister of Jharkhand, Hemant Soren on August 29, announced an ex-gratia amount of INR 10 lakh to Ankita’s family.

Following the announcement, her father said, “Her daughter could have been saved had the CM given the amount while she was alive.”

The local Hindu organisations are coming up with a different tell-tale, terming the incident as ‘Love Jihad’. The government has also been pressed up for a fair and speedy trial.
