After 14 years, a special court in Ahmedabad has pronounced judgment in the serial blasts case, which happened on July 26, 2008. In the case, 49 accused were convicted on February 14 after hearing the case at Ahmedabad City Civil and Sessions Court. In the case, the court has pronounced the death penalty to 38 convicts under the UAPA and IPC 302 and 11 others were sentenced to life imprisonment until death.

Public Prosecutors addressing the media after the verdict

After hearing both sides, the special court on February 8 had declared 49 out of a total of 78 accused as guilty. The court had heard from the public prosecutor and lawyers of the accused on 11th and 14th February before the pronouncement of the judgment. The court has awarded the sentences to 49 convicts under UAPA, various sections of the IPC, Explosive Substances Act and Prevention of Damage to Public Property act. One convict, Usman Agarbattiwala, has been awarded one year of imprisonment under the arms act. Ayaz Saiyed, who allegedly planted bombs, turned an approver in the case.

During the hearing prosecution termed it a terrorist act and added that it is a rarest of rare act as innocents have lost life, many were injured and keeping in mind the heinous crime committed by the convicts, judgement should be pronounced as it is an act of war against the country. On the other hand, the accused’s lawyer had asked the court to give them a second chance and give minimum punishment.

On July 26, 2008, bomb blasts happened at various locations in Ahmedabad like L.G Hospital, Civil hospital and other places, killing 56 persons, and around 200 were injured. Terrorist group Indian Mujahideen had taken responsibility for the terrorist attack.
