Congress Targets BJP for Alleged State Patronage of Drugs

| Updated: August 1, 2022 21:09

Addiction to alcohol, marijuana, and hashish has been rampant among the youth in Gujarat. The Mundra port in the state has been in the limelight with recent high-profile drug seizures. On September 21 last year, 3,000 kg of drugs worth Rs 21,000 crore were seized. On May 22 this year, 56 kg of drugs worth Rs 500 crore were seized, and last month, the ATS seized about 75.3 kg of heroin, estimated to be worth Rs 376.5 crore from the same port. Some of the drugs allegedly make their way to Gujarat from Afghanistan.

The Opposition in the state has been routinely raising the issue and slammed the BJP government in the state over the recent recoveries. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been persistently tweeting about the seizures and the sorry state of affairs in the state. The Wayanad MP has raised pertinent questions regarding the use of drugs among the youth in the state. “Who in the double engine government is giving protection to the drug and liquor mafia? Why are the youth of Gujarat being pushed into drunkenness? How are drugs continuously landing at the same port? Is the legal system in Gujarat dead? The mafia has no fear of the law, so is this a mafia government?”, Gandhi tweeted targeting the alleged ‘patronage’ of the state government.

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also tweeted about the issue. She further stated that there is utter silence in the media and lethargy in the government; besides all the government agencies are mum on the issue. “Under the very nose of the BJP government, the mafia is selling drugs all over the country. The law and order system is helpless and in collusion with the mafia,” she claimed in her tweet.

The brother-sister duo took to Twitter after the recent arrest of 13 people related to the hooch tragedy in Botad district and Dhandhuka taluka of neighboring Ahmedabad district.

Chief spokesperson of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee, Dr. Manish Doshi, said that it is clear from the statistics that the liquor ban in Gujarat is on paper only. Liquor worth more than Rs 200 crore has been seized in the last two years in the supposedly ‘dry state’ of Gujarat. The state has a daily drug business of Rs 8 crore with hashish and marijuana clocking Rs 3 and Rs 5 crore respectively.

Hemang Rawal, a media coordinator of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee, said that to prevent drug addiction, the devices and accessories used for the consumption of drugs should be banned for use and sale in Gujarat.
