Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) airport in Ahmedabad witnessed a 29% increase in the number of passengers traveling through the city airport in 2023. Data from Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the city airport operator showed that 1.11 crore passengers used the city airport from January 1 to December 15, compared to 86 lakh passengers in the same period last year.
The passenger movement grew significantly during the year, thanks to a busy summer and Diwali holiday season, higher flight bookings on long weekends, better connectivity and various international business and sports events in Ahmedabad. Manish Sharma, chairman of Tourism Development Society – Gujarat, said, “Gujarat hosted some important events at the national and global level. These include G20 events, IPL matches and World Cup Cricket matches. This led to a rise in inbound tourism, especially among those who came for meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE). The year also saw several conferences, such as the Semicon India, which attracted investors from around the world to Gujarat. These are some of the main factors for the increased passenger movement in the city.” NRI arrivals also saw a significant growth this year after Covid.
Passenger travel was further boosted by improved frequency of flights to existing destinations and direct air links to many domestic and international locations. “Direct flights to far-east destinations like Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia have enhanced leisure tourism. Moreover, both summer and Diwali holidays were popular in terms of bookings,” said Ankit Bajaj, owner of an Ahmedabad-based travel company. During the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 final matches, SVPI airport recorded the highest passenger movement for three consecutive days, with 42,224 passengers travelling on a single day, as per the airport operator.
