Modi Slams Opposition For ‘Self-Harm’ Over Operation Sindoor Debate

| Updated: August 5, 2025 13:07

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a stinging rebuke of the Opposition’s demand for a discussion in Parliament on Operation Sindoor, calling it a “mistake” that backfired. Speaking at a meeting of the NDA parliamentary party, Modi said the Opposition had only harmed itself by seeking a debate on India’s military response to terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), according to unnamed officials quoted by a section of the media.

The Prime Minister reportedly did not mince words, declaring that the Opposition got “thrashed badly” and had “shot itself in the foot” during last week’s debate in the Monsoon Session of Parliament. Sources further quoted him as saying the Opposition was insistent on “self-harm”.

The meeting, the second such gathering of the BJP-led alliance since the formation of the government in June last year, doubled as an occasion to formally recognise the Prime Minister’s leadership in the face of national security threats. Modi was felicitated by NDA MPs for what they described as his “exceptional leadership” during the government’s robust response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which left 26 people dead. Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, was the centrepiece of this response.

In a resolution passed during the meeting, NDA MPs hailed Modi’s role in guiding the nation at a critical juncture.

“PM Modi’s unwavering resolve, visionary statesmanship and resolute command have not only steered the nation with purpose but also ignited a renewed spirit of unity and pride in the hearts of all Indians,” the resolution, published by the media, stated.

The tribute extended beyond the political leadership to the men in uniform. Acknowledging the military’s role in the operation, the MPs saluted the “unmatched courage and unwavering commitment” of the Indian armed forces.

“Their courage highlights their unflinching devotion to protecting our nation,” the resolution read.

Highlighting the precision of the operation, the resolution said that Operation Sindoor “entailed a non-escalatory, precise and targeted attack” on terrorist training camps.

The MPs underlined that the strike reflected India’s principled stance on terrorism: “It resonated with India’s commitment to peace, zero tolerance towards terror and commitment to do whatever it takes to uproot terrorist infrastructure if circumstances so demanded.”

The NDA leaders also observed a moment of solemnity, remembering those who perished in the Pahalgam attack.

“This terror attack saddened and enraged everyone,” they said, expressing collective grief over the loss.

In the same breath, the resolution applauded the Modi government’s efforts to take India’s message to the world in the wake of the operation. It highlighted the extensive diplomatic campaign launched to underline the global threat of terrorism and India’s resolve to combat it.

“After Operation Sindoor, the Prime Minister ensured 59 Members of Parliament from across parties visited 32 countries to present India’s point of view. This is one of the most comprehensive global outreach ever launched by India, highlighting how the country has been a victim of terror and why a terror attack in any one part of the world is a crime against humanity across the globe,” the resolution said.

The message from the NDA camp was unambiguous: India’s fight against terror will not be compromised by political theatrics, and any attempt to undermine national resolve — even within Parliament — will be met with firm political and public rejection.
