M S Dhoni is one of India’s most successful cricket captains. He led India to major victories including the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 ODI World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy. Before him, Kapil Dev famously won the World Cup in 1983.
However, some former players and their families have raised concerns about how Dhoni treated teammates during his captaincy.
Recently, Yograj Singh — the father of former cricketer Yuvraj Singh — criticized Dhoni, along with Kapil Dev and Bishan Singh Bedi, saying they didn’t treat people well. “They treated people like dirt,” said Yograj in an interview on a YouTube Channel. “Two wrongs don’t make a right. Our team was destroyed by our captain.”
Meanwhile, Irfan Pathan found himself at the center of an online storm when an old video clip from 2020 resurfaced. In the video, he spoke about being dropped from the Indian team in 2008 when Dhoni was captain. He suggested that favoritism played a role.
In the clip, Pathan said he wasn’t someone who went to others’ rooms to set up their hookah — a comment that social media took literally, sparking fresh debate.
Pathan responded to the viral clip on X (formerly Twitter), saying the video was being shared out of context:
“Half-decade-old video surfacing NOW with a twisted context to the statement. Fan war? PR lobby?” he tweeted.
Yograj Singh also commented on the resurfaced Irfan Pathan clip, saying this wasn’t just about one player. He pointed out that other cricketers like Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, and Harbhajan Singh have also spoken about being sidelined.
“Harbhajan said he was thrown out of the team like a fly,” Yograj claimed. “There should be a proper inquiry into why Dhoni made those decisions. If someone avoids answering questions, it shows a guilty conscience.”
