| Updated: November 29, 2025 13:26

There are frequent reports of mobile phones and other prohibited items being discovered in various jails across Gujarat. VIP inmates are often alleged to receive special treatment behind bars, and there are also accusations that prisoners bribe staff members in exchange for additional facilities.

This time around, a mobile phone has been found from the cell that houses Narayan Sai, son of self-styled Godman Asharam Bapu. While Asharam is serving a life sentence in Ahmedabad Central Jail in connection with a rape case, his son, Narayan, is also serving a life sentence on the charges of rape and several other charges. He is lodged in Lajpor Jail in Surat.

The raid in his cell was conducted after a tip off received by jailor Dipak Bhabhor. The mobile phone was found attached to the iron door and the battery was recovered from the room of one of the staffers (guard) of the jail. According to reports, the sim card was hidden in an inhaler with Narayan Sai.

According to jail authorities, they suspect the hand the staffer.

Asharam has a sprawling ashram on the banks of River Sabarmati in Ahmedabad.
