A recent analysis by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has highlighted a substantial increase in personal wealth among many Members of Parliament who have spent at least a decade in the Lok Sabha, with several MPs from Gujarat recording notable gains.
The study examined affidavits filed with the Election Commission of India (ECI) during the 2014 and 2024 general elections. It covered 102 MPs from across the country who were re-elected and have completed a minimum of 10 years in Parliament.
According to the findings, these MPs reported an average rise in assets of Rs 17.36 crore over the 10-year period.
Eight MPs from Gujarat were included in the analysis, most of whom showed significant growth in their declared wealth between the two elections. Jamnagar MP Poonam Madam emerged as one of the most striking cases nationwide. Her assets rose by Rs 130 crore over the decade, increasing from Rs 17.43 crore in 2014 to Rs 147.70 crore in 2024 — a jump of 747%.
This was the second-highest increase among all MPs studied. The highest increase was recorded by Satara MP Shrimant Udayaraje Bhonsle, whose declared assets grew by Rs 162 crore during the same period.
ADR’s report also found that six other MPs from Gujarat registered asset increases ranging from Rs 2 crore to Rs 6 crore over the decade. Several of them saw their wealth multiply several times over compared to their 2014 declarations.
However, the trend was not uniform. BJP’s Gujarat state president and Navsari MP C R Paatil was the only MP from the state in the study to report a fall in assets. According to his affidavits, his declared wealth declined from Rs 74 crore in 2014 to Rs 39 crore in 2024, reflecting a decrease of 47%.
The ADR analysis underscores the sharp changes in declared wealth among long-serving MPs, drawing attention to asset growth patterns over extended tenures in Parliament.
