From Matrimony Chat To Crypto Fraud: Ahmedabad CFO Loses ₹78.9 Lakh

| Updated: July 25, 2026 08:54

A 33-year-old Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of a multinational company in Ahmedabad has allegedly lost ₹78.9 lakh in a cryptocurrency investment fraud after being lured by a woman he met through a matrimonial app. The cybercrime police have registered an FIR in connection with the case.

The victim, a resident of Naranpura, was allegedly convinced to invest in cryptocurrency through promises of high returns. The accused woman reportedly gained his trust over several months before encouraging him to transfer large amounts of money into fake investment platforms.

Woman Met Victim Through Matrimony App

According to the FIR, the victim created a profile on a matrimonial app in March 2025. On May 8, he came across a profile under the name “Harshita” and sent a connection request.

After the request was accepted, the two started communicating through WhatsApp. The woman shared her personal details and maintained regular contact with him, gradually building a relationship and gaining his confidence.

During their conversations, she allegedly spoke about cryptocurrency trading and claimed to have earned significant profits through investments.

Fake Investment Story Used to Gain Trust

The accused allegedly told the victim that she had made large profits from cryptocurrency investments and even claimed to have purchased property in Berlin, Germany. She reportedly shared videos of the property as proof to make her claims appear genuine.

After gaining his trust, she introduced him to an investment website and recommended that he register on the platform.

The victim was guided through the process and completed verification. He was then asked to transfer money into bank accounts shared by the platform’s customer care representatives.

₹78.9 Lakh Transferred Over Several Months

According to the complaint, the victim made multiple payments over several months. After every transaction, he allegedly received fake receipts and was shown increasing cryptocurrency earnings in his online account.

The portal displayed profits, convincing him that his investment was growing.

However, when the victim later attempted to withdraw his money, he was allegedly asked to pay additional charges. Despite making repeated payments, his funds were not released.

Victim Approaches Cybercrime Police

Realising that he had been cheated, the victim approached the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal and later filed a complaint with the police.

The cybercrime department has registered an FIR and started an investigation into the alleged cryptocurrency investment scam.

Authorities have once again advised citizens to remain cautious about online investment offers, especially those promising unusually high returns, and to verify investment platforms before transferring money.
