For many Gujaratis, the US remains the ultimate destination. The pull is just too relentless.
And for some, desperation for the US outweighs risks. More often than not, they cross into criminal territories.
Another episode of an uncompromising will to go to the US (even if it means getting off-side with the rules) has surfaced.
The city crime branch has registered a case against him for allegedly using forged educational documents to secure a US H-1B visa.
The complaint was lodged with the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) by inspector J K Makwana. The case stems from a visa-related reference received by the DCB through an official communication dated May 29, 2025, according to the FIR.
According to the FIR published by a section of the media, Jay Patel, a resident of Amco Society in Ghatlodia, applied online for a US H-1B visa on April 7, 2025.
Along with his application, Patel allegedly submitted a copy of his Indian passport, two-degree certificates, and eight semester-wise marksheets. The documents claimed to have been issued by the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management (RGITM).
During his interview at the US Consulate General in Hyderabad, Patel reportedly said that the degree certificates and marksheets bearing his name were provided to him by a woman identified only as “Dhruti”. Her full identity and address have not yet been established. Patel told officials that the documents were supplied specifically to support his visa application.
Following this disclosure, the DCB conducted a verification with RGITM, Delhi. The institute confirmed that the certificates and marksheets submitted by Patel were prima facie forged and fake, police said.
Investigators stated that Patel and the unidentified woman acted in concert and prepared the forged academic documents at an unknown time prior to April 7, 2025, while being in Ghatlodia. The documents were allegedly presented as genuine in order to deceive authorities and facilitate the visa process.
Based on these findings, the DCB has booked Patel and the unidentified accomplice under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita on charges of forgery, cheating, and criminal conspiracy.
The dream of working abroad remains powerful but, as this episode proves, the systems governing it are increasingly unforgiving of deception.
