Gujarati Woman Shot Dead in US Store

| Updated: May 26, 2026 14:36

A woman from Gujarat’s Mehsana district was shot dead inside her convenience store in the United States in a shocking incident that was captured on CCTV footage and has since gone viral on social media.

The victim, identified as Meghna Patel, hailed from Jantral village in Vijapur taluka of Mehsana district and had been living in the US with her family for several years.

According to preliminary reports, Meghna was managing the convenience store when an unidentified masked man entered the premises posing as a customer before allegedly opening fire during what police suspect was a robbery attempt.

CCTV Captures Final Moments

The surveillance footage shows Meghna Patel standing behind the store counter near cash registers and lottery ticket displays when the suspect calmly walks into the shop.

The accused, dressed in dark clothing with a hooded jacket and camouflage-patterned pants, is seen approaching the counter while briefly interacting with the victim.

Within moments, the situation turns violent.

The footage allegedly captures sudden gunfire erupting near the counter, with objects flying amid the commotion. Meghna Patel sustained critical gunshot injuries and was later declared dead.

After the shooting, the suspect is seen allegedly grabbing items from the counter before fleeing the store within seconds.

Authorities said the footage clearly captures the suspect’s entry, the shooting and escape route inside the store, though events outside the premises were not recorded in the released clip.

Police Probe Underway

Local law enforcement agencies are investigating the case and suspect the incident may have been linked to an attempted robbery.

Police are currently analysing CCTV footage, collecting forensic evidence and attempting to identify the suspect.

No arrests had been announced at the time of reporting.

Shock Waves in Gujarat Community

The killing has triggered shock and grief both in Meghna Patel’s native village in Gujarat and among the Indian-origin community in the United States.

Residents of Jantral village described the incident as devastating, with several recalling that Meghna’s family had migrated abroad years ago in pursuit of better opportunities.

The viral CCTV footage has also reignited concerns within the Indian diaspora over the increasing number of violent robberies and gun-related crimes targeting small business owners in parts of the United States.

String of Attacks on Gujarati-Origin Store Owners

The incident is among several recent cases involving Gujarati-origin motel and convenience store owners becoming victims of violent crime in the US.

Over the past few years, multiple Indian-origin shopkeepers — many from Gujarat — have been assaulted, robbed or killed while managing gas stations, liquor stores and convenience outlets, businesses where family members often work long hours with limited staff.

Community groups in the US have repeatedly called for stronger policing and improved security measures in vulnerable commercial areas following such attacks.
