The family of an Indian IT professional who was killed in a shooting in Canada has been left shattered, saying they had repeatedly urged him to return to India over the past few years.
Chandan Kumar, originally from Thyamagondlu in Nelamangala on the outskirts of Bengaluru, was shot dead in Toronto. News of his death has plunged his hometown locality into mourning.
His father, Nanda Kumar, told a vernacular news channel that the family never imagined such a tragedy.
“We had never expected this, not even in our dreams. We had been telling him to come back as it has been six to seven years since he left for Canada, but he did not listen to us,” he said.
The grieving father has appealed to the Government of India to assist in bringing his son’s body back so that the last rites can be performed in his native place.
According to media reports, Chandan Kumar’s mother suspects that his involvement in community activities may have played a role in the incident. She claimed that her son had recently helped establish a Kannada association in Toronto, which she believes could be connected to the motive behind his killing.
Canadian police said the 37-year-old Indian-Canadian was shot by unidentified men in the parking lot of a crowded shopping centre in Toronto.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Toronto Police Service identified the victim as Chandan Kumar Raja Nandakumar of Brampton.
He was taken to hospital but later died from his injuries. Investigators have described the shooting as a “targeted” incident, and inquiries are continuing.
