A massive $15 billion Google AI data centre project was launched near Visakhapatnam on Tuesday, with the Adani Group and Bharti Airtel emerging as key infrastructure partners.
Speaking at the foundation-laying ceremony, Jeet Adani and Rakesh Bharti Mittal said the project would transform Vizag into one of India’s most important digital and AI hubs.
‘A Defining Moment For India’s AI Future’
Jeet Adani said the global AI race will be decided not only by software innovation, but by the ability to build large-scale infrastructure, power systems, and digital connectivity.
“There are moments that define the course of history, and today marks one such moment in Visakhapatnam as it steps forward to anchor India’s AI-driven digital future,” he said.
The project is being developed through a partnership involving Google, AdaniConneX, and Nxtra by Airtel, with plans to create a gigawatt-scale AI ecosystem aligned with India’s Viksit Bharat vision.
Nearly 1 GW Capacity Planned In One Location
Adani noted that India currently has around 1.3 gigawatts of total data centre capacity, while nearly 1 GW is now being planned in a single location in Visakhapatnam—highlighting the unprecedented scale of the project.
He stressed that affordable energy would be central to AI expansion.
“The cost of intelligence is directly linked to the cost of power,” he said, adding that lower energy costs would make AI computing more accessible and scalable.
Vizag To Become India’s Digital Gateway
Mittal said N. Chandrababu Naidu’s government had shown strong policy clarity and execution, helping attract landmark investments.
He said Visakhapatnam, long known as a maritime gateway, would now become a gateway for the intelligence age.
“The opportunity for this region is immense, and Visakhapatnam will serve as the gateway for Digital India and intelligence-driven infrastructure,” Mittal said.
Renewable Power, Cable Landing Station, Fibre Networks
The AI campus will reportedly include:
- A state-of-the-art cable landing station
- Extensive intra-city and inter-city fibre networks
- Renewable energy-powered operations
- Ultra-low latency digital infrastructure
Gopal Vittal said Airtel’s integrated capabilities in fibre, green power and data centres would help power the landmark AI hub.
Strategic Significance
Corporate leaders said strong partnerships between global tech giants and Indian infrastructure firms would be crucial to building sovereign AI capacity, lowering computing costs, and expanding innovation across sectors.
With this investment, Visakhapatnam is being positioned at the centre of India’s fast-growing AI ambitions and next-generation digital economy.
