He Called Her ‘Gawar’ In Public”: Twisha Sharma’s Friends Reveal

| Updated: May 22, 2026 12:49

The death of 33-year-old Twisha Sharma — found hanging at her marital home in Bhopal barely five months after her marriage — is now exposing disturbing allegations of emotional abuse, humiliation and control inside what friends describe as a deeply toxic marriage.

As police continue searching for her absconding husband, lawyer Samarth Singh, people close to Twisha have begun speaking publicly about what they claim she silently endured after marriage.

According to Twisha’s friends Navratan, Prerna and Purshottam, Samarth frequently humiliated her in front of friends and family, often mocking her intelligence and background.

“He used to call her ‘gawar’ publicly,” her friends alleged. “He would say she knows nothing, has studied nothing and cannot do anything. He constantly insulted her during gatherings.”

The friends said Twisha’s personality visibly changed within just months of marriage.

“She became unusually quiet,” they recalled, referring to her behaviour during her brother’s wedding earlier this year. “After two to three months of marriage, she was under immense pressure from.” The allegations become even more disturbing around Twisha’s pregnancy and abortion.

According to her friends, the relationship deteriorated sharply after she underwent an abortion from what they described as an unplanned pregnancy. They alleged that Samarth and his mother, Giribala Singh, repeatedly questioned Twisha over the pregnancy and even the identity of the child’s father.

Friends also claimed Twisha’s parents had once booked tickets to Madhya Pradesh to bring her back home, fearing for her mental wellbeing. But they allegedly cancelled the trip after Giribala Singh warned that if Twisha left the house, she would never be allowed to return.

One of Twisha’s close friends, Prachi, alleged another troubling detail after her death. According to her, Twisha maintained two phones — one for work and another for personal use — but her in-laws allegedly attempted to keep the personal phone away from her family after she died.

Twisha had reportedly met Samarth through a dating app in 2024. The two married in December 2025. Less than six months later, on May 12, she was found dead inside her marital home in Bhopal.

Since then, the case has snowballed into a wider conversation about emotional abuse inside marriages — particularly forms of humiliation and psychological control that often leave no visible scars.

Twisha’s parents have accused her husband and in-laws of sustained physical and mental harassment, including dowry-related abuse. WhatsApp chats reportedly exchanged between Twisha and her mother, Rekha Sharma, allegedly show a woman feeling trapped in an unhappy marriage and suffering continuous mental torture.

In response, Giribala Singh — a retired judge and co-accused in the case — has claimed Twisha suffered from psychiatric issues and drug addiction. However, police have publicly stated that they have found no evidence supporting those allegations so far.

Twisha’s family has strongly rejected those claims, describing her instead as a cheerful, healthy woman whose mental and physical condition deteriorated rapidly after marriage. According to relatives, she lost a significant amount of weight amid constant emotional stress.

While Giribala Singh has secured anticipatory bail from a sessions court, Samarth Singh remains absconding. Bhopal police have announced a cash reward of Rs 30,000 for information leading to his arrest.

The case is now becoming far bigger than one suspicious death.

For many, Twisha Sharma’s story is emerging as a chilling reminder that emotional abuse inside marriages often remains invisible — until it is too late.

Friends say Twisha underwent a drastic personality change shortly after marriage.

“She became extremely quiet and withdrawn,” they recalled while speaking about her behaviour during her brother’s recent wedding. “Within two to three months of marriage, she was under severe pressure from her in-laws.”

The allegations have shocked many because Giribala Singh is herself a retired judge.

Twisha’s friends also claim her parents had once booked tickets to Madhya Pradesh to bring her back home after sensing her deteriorating mental state. However, they allegedly cancelled the trip after Giribala warned that if Twisha left the house, she would never be allowed to return.

Another close friend, Prachi, alleged that Twisha maintained separate work and personal phones, but after her death, her in-laws allegedly attempted to keep the personal device away from her family.

The case has drawn national attention partly because of the WhatsApp chats that have surfaced between Twisha and her mother, Rekha Sharma. In the messages, Twisha allegedly described feeling “trapped” in an unhappy marriage and complained of relentless mental torture and dowry-related harassment.

Her family claims she was physically assaulted as well.

In response, Giribala Singh has denied the allegations and instead claimed that Twisha suffered from psychiatric problems and drug addiction. She alleged Twisha displayed withdrawal symptoms when she did not receive “her dose.”

However, Bhopal police have publicly stated they have found no evidence supporting those claims so far.

Twisha’s family has fiercely rejected the accusations, saying she was a cheerful, independent and professionally successful woman before marriage. According to relatives, her health deteriorated rapidly after the wedding, and she lost a significant amount of weight in just a few months.

The investigation has also spotlighted the influence allegedly wielded by the accused family. Twisha’s relatives earlier claimed they feared attempts were being made to influence the probe through “powerful contacts” and “influential calls.”

While Giribala Singh has secured anticipatory bail from a sessions court, Samarth Singh’s anticipatory bail plea was rejected. Police say he is currently on the run and have announced a Rs 30,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.

The Twisha Sharma case has now become part of a larger national conversation around emotional abuse inside marriages — a form of violence many women endure silently because it often leaves no physical evidence.

For many following the case, the most haunting detail is not how Twisha died, but the growing allegations about how systematically she may have been broken before her death.
