The Ebola outbreak in the eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is escalating rapidly, with suspected infections crossing the 900 mark and health authorities struggling to contain the spread in conflict-ridden areas.
According to Congolese authorities, the country has now recorded 904 suspected Ebola cases and 119 suspected deaths in the latest outbreak centred in the eastern province of Ituri. The figures were released by Congo’s Ministry of Communication through an official statement posted on X on Sunday.
The outbreak is linked to the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus — a less common but still dangerous variant of the disease known for causing severe fever, internal bleeding and organ failure. While the current death toll appears lower than some earlier outbreaks, health experts warn that the actual numbers could rise sharply because many cases remain unconfirmed in remote and violence-hit regions.

WHO Warns of “Very High” National Risk
The World Health Organization has categorised the outbreak as a “very high” risk for Congo due to weak healthcare infrastructure, displacement caused by armed conflict, and difficulties in tracking infected individuals in remote areas.
However, global health officials have stated that the risk of international spread currently remains low.
Eastern Congo has long been vulnerable to infectious disease outbreaks because years of militia violence and poor infrastructure have crippled public health systems. Health workers often struggle to access villages, while misinformation and distrust of authorities sometimes lead residents to avoid treatment centres.
Congo’s Long Battle With Ebola
The Democratic Republic of Congo has faced multiple Ebola outbreaks over the past five decades and remains one of the countries most affected by the deadly virus since it was first identified near the Ebola River in 1976.
The country’s deadliest outbreak occurred between 2018 and 2020 in North Kivu and Ituri provinces, when more than 2,200 people died despite a massive international vaccination campaign. Armed conflict severely complicated containment efforts during that crisis as treatment centres were repeatedly attacked.
Ebola spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected persons or contaminated surfaces. Symptoms include fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle pain and, in severe cases, internal and external bleeding.

India has never witnessed a full-scale Ebola outbreak, but the country has repeatedly activated emergency surveillance systems whenever cases surged in Africa.
During the 2014 West African Ebola epidemic — the deadliest in history — Indian airports began thermal screening of passengers arriving from affected countries. Isolation wards were established in major hospitals, and health authorities issued strict quarantine protocols for travellers returning from African nations.
India’s large diaspora presence in Africa, including thousands of professionals and workers in countries such as Congo, Nigeria and Uganda, means outbreaks in the continent are closely monitored by Indian authorities.
Public health experts in India often cite Ebola outbreaks as reminders of how rapidly infectious diseases can overwhelm healthcare systems if surveillance weakens — lessons reinforced again during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Aid Agencies Race Against Time
International aid organisations are now rushing vaccines, protective equipment and medical teams into eastern Congo. But experts fear the combination of poverty, displacement and fragile governance could make containment difficult.
Health officials are urging local communities to report symptoms early, avoid unsafe burial practices and cooperate with contact-tracing teams to prevent the outbreak from spiralling further across Central Africa.
