The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has achieved a major political milestone in Gujarat by winning all four Rajya Sabha seats from the state without any contest. Since no opposition candidate remained in the race, all four BJP nominees were declared elected unopposed.
This victory is significant because, for the first time, Gujarat will send an all-BJP team of 11 Rajya Sabha MPs to Parliament. It also means that the Congress will no longer have a single representative from Gujarat in the Rajya Sabha, ending its presence in the Upper House from the state after decades.
The four seats became vacant as the six-year terms of BJP MPs Rambhai Mokariya, Narhari Amin, and Ramilaben Bara, along with Congress MP Shaktisinh Gohil, are ending on June 21, 2026. With the BJP’s overwhelming majority in the 182-member Gujarat Assembly, the party had enough strength to comfortably secure all four seats.
The BJP’s newly elected Rajya Sabha members are Rajubhai Shukla, Mansinh Parmar, Mukeshbhai Rathwa, and Jitendra Kanjariya. The party selected leaders from different social backgrounds and regions of Gujarat, including OBC and tribal communities, reflecting its strategy of broad representation.
The Congress did not field a candidate for these elections, making the BJP’s victory uncontested. Political observers say this marks a symbolic moment in Gujarat politics, as the state’s representation in the Rajya Sabha will now be entirely from the BJP.
For ordinary citizens, the Rajya Sabha is the Upper House of Parliament, where states send their representatives to discuss and pass national laws. Unlike Lok Sabha MPs, Rajya Sabha members are elected by MLAs in the state assemblies rather than directly by the public. With these results, Gujarat’s voice in the Rajya Sabha will now come solely from BJP representatives for the first time.
