‘I Love You, Mummy Papa’: NEET Aspirant Found Dead In Dehradun, Leaves Emotional Note

| Updated: June 17, 2026 21:53

She had scored 97% in Class 12, topped her school, and was working towards her dream of becoming a doctor. But in a tragic turn of events, a 23-year-old NEET aspirant from Dehradun was found dead at her home, leaving behind a heartfelt message for her parents and raising concerns about the pressure faced by students preparing for competitive examinations.

The woman, identified as Riya Kumari Thapa, was the daughter of a veteran who served in the 1999 Kargil War.

According to her family, Riya usually studied late at night and woke up later in the day. On Tuesday afternoon, her mother went to call her for lunch but received no response. When the door remained locked, she informed Riya’s father. The family then forced the door open and found her unresponsive inside the room.

Police said a note was recovered from the room. In the note, Riya reportedly wrote in Hindi, “I love you, Mummy, Papa. No one is at fault.”

Senior police officer Ankit Kandari said the note also mentioned that Riya loved her father deeply and did not want anyone blamed for her death. According to police, she appeared to hold herself responsible and expressed disappointment over her own abilities.

Investigators believe that frustration related to her studies may have been a major reason behind the incident.

Riya had performed exceptionally well in academics and had scored 97 percent in Class 12, topping her school. She was preparing for the NEET-UG re-examination scheduled for June 21 after not clearing the medical entrance examination in her first attempt. Police are continuing their inquiry into the matter.
