Nearly a year after three people lost their lives following an unrequired angioplasty procedure under PM-JAY at Khyati Hospital, located on the SG Highway, Ahmedabad, charges are yet to be framed against the accused. The majority of them are out on bail.
While two people lost their lives within days and months after the procedure, one died in a year’s time.
Hospital director Chirag Rajput, Sanjay Patoliya, director Rajeshree Kothari, Rahul Jain, and marketing manager Parthik Bhatt are out on bail. However, three doctors, Prashant Vazirani, Kartik Patel, and Milind Patel, are behind bars.
So far, nine persons have been arrested, and a 6,070-page chargesheet has been filed against eight persons.
Dr Karan Barot, state spokesperson of the Aam Aadmi Party, told Vibes of India that whether it’s Khyati Hospital, the Harni Boat incident, the Morbi Bridge collapse, or the Takshashila disaster in Surat, no action is being taken against the perpetrators of these horrific events because they, in one way or another, have ties with the BJP.
For those who came in late, on November 11, 2024, unwarranted angioplasty procedures were conducted on 19 persons from Borisana village near Mehsana, North Gujarat.
Following the incident, the hospital was delisted from PM-JAY, and a state-wide inquiry was instituted into hospitals offering these services.
It emerged during the investigation that the hospital used to conduct camps in the villages and bring patients to Ahmedabad so that procedures could be performed. They used to lure people in villages and small towns, saying the treatment was free.
A large number of patients used to come to the hospital despite not having any serious problems. In the case of these botched angioplasty procedures as well, members of their families had told the media that their elders did not have any major trouble, at least not related to the heart.
The police have so far interrogated more than 130 people, and during raids at the hospital, they seized 38 files and 12 registers.
Additionally, seven witnesses have testified before the magistrate under Section 164 of the CrPC. Bank accounts of the hospital have also been scrutinised.
