Khyati Hospital Scandal: Concerned By Public Health, NMC Lifts Ban On Tainted Doctor

| Updated: April 29, 2025 12:53

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has decided to lift a temporary ban on Dr Prashant Vazirani, a cardiologist who was being investigated for his role in the deaths of two patients at Khyati Hospital. NMC communicated the decision in a letter to the Gujarat Medical Council (GMC), according to reports.

Dr Raghav Langer, secretary of NMC, has signed the letter. It mentions that GMC’s letter dated April 23 establishes new facts to the notice of EMRB (Ethics & Medical Registration Board) that included Dr Vazirani being in judicial custody since his arrest on November 13, his position as a non-empanelled doctor at the hospital for the PMJAY scheme and him performing unwarranted angiography and angioplasty procedures.

The NMC had instructed the GMC to keep Dr Vazirani to prohibit him from practicing medicine for three years while investigations were on. However, the GMC reached out to the NMC last week with new information from a government investigation, expressing concern that continuing the ban could harm public health and damage trust in the medical system.

These incidents happened last November, when he allegedly performed unnecessary angioplasty procedures.

On April 25, the NMC officially removed the ban, stating that they had reviewed the new facts presented by the GMC, which revealed that Dr Vazirani had been in judicial custody since November 13, was not officially registered with the government’s health scheme, and had been performing unnecessary medical procedures.

The NMC wants the GMC and Dr Vazirani to submit all relevant documents related to the case, including investigation reports and other important papers, within 10 days.

According to reports, Dr Nitin Vora, the president of the GMC, expressed satisfaction with this decision, calling it a win for the council and a positive step forward. He mentioned that they had provided the NMC with important facts and were ready to comply with any further requirements.
