Jammu: In the wake of a controversial incident and heightened tensions in Jammu and Kashmir, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh addressed soldiers stationed there, urging them to prioritize both security and winning the hearts of the local population.
Mr. Singh’s visit comes after four soldiers were killed in a terrorist attack and three civilians died after being detained by the Army for questioning. The incident sparked public outrage and raised concerns about civilian well-being during anti-terror operations.
“While ensuring national security is paramount,” Mr. Singh emphasized, “you must also strive to build trust and understanding with the people you protect. Every mistake could hurt an Indian, and that’s something we cannot afford.”
He stressed the importance of forging a close bond with the community, stating, “Winning battles against terrorists is crucial, but winning the hearts of the people is an even greater victory. We need to stand together, not just in defense, but in shared respect and trust.”
He assured the troops, “Every soldier is like family to every Indian. We feel your sacrifices keenly, and we will not tolerate any threat to your safety. The government is fully committed to providing all necessary support, whether it’s intelligence resources for enhanced surveillance or financial aid for your well-being and security.”
Acknowledging the recent attack, Mr. Singh urged vigilance, saying, “While I commend your bravery and dedication, even greater alertness is needed. Your service brings immense pride to the nation, and your sacrifices are invaluable. Losing a soldier to martyrdom is a loss no compensation can truly replace.”
He concluded by praising the Indian Army’s growing strength and capabilities, highlighting its crucial role in safeguarding the nation. Mr. Singh’s visit is expected to include meetings with local residents, families of the deceased civilians, and a high-level security meeting.
