Construction of a new ‘semi-automated’ cargo terminal is already underway at Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) airport. The terminal, to come up opposite the India Meteorological Department office on the premises, is expected to be operational by June 2023. This terminal will be capable of handling domestic, and international cargo, express courier, cold-chain pharma, as well as other perishable cargo.
According to available data, 1.15 lakh tonnes of cargo was processed at the airport in the year 2019. The new facility, with a total built-up area of 33,000 square meters, will increase cargo handling capacity of the airport. The first phase will cover a built-up area of 21,000 square meters.
A new cargo terminal with a capacity to handle around 100 tonnes of cargo per day was inaugurated by the city’s airport operator in April this year. The terminal which was earlier used as a Haj terminal has also been converted into a cargo terminal.
