Almost a week after the bridge deck collapsed in Mumatpura on December 22, a five-member committee will investigate the happening. The committee consists of senior engineers from Gujarat Engineering Research Institute (GERI) and Directorate of Forensic Sciences (DFS) Gandhinagar along with three engineers from the roads and building department.
The incident took place with around 90 people on-site while the post-tensioning of the last box girder during the construction allotted to the Unjha based contractor, Ranjit Buildcon Limited. Apart from this, the company has with several other projects of highways and bridges in present and past. In 2007, one similar bridge-deck collapse took place in Surat that left a labourer dead on the spot.
The committee will examine the strength of concrete, quality of other materials by taking samples from the site and later the building department will determine that the levels of the quality were maintained or were compromised.
