Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation to Launch Pet Registration App

| Updated: March 7, 2024 14:00

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is set to launch a mobile application that will allow pet owners in Ahmedabad to register their pets with just a few taps on their smartphones.

The AMC is currently formulating a policy to make pet registrations mandatory. The policy will require dogs and other pets to be registered with updated vaccination details. The upcoming app, expected to be launched in a month, will facilitate this process by allowing pet owners to submit their pet’s details, pay a registration fee of Rs 500, upload vaccination records, and download the registration certificate.

According to a senior AMC official, it is estimated that there are 50,000 pet dogs in Ahmedabad, and registration will be compulsory. The official stated, “Owners will have to pay Rs 500 per pet, and the entire process will be online. Vaccination certificates will have to be uploaded annually.”

The app will simplify the process by accepting registration fees and enabling owners to download the registration certificate. The official also pointed out that the Gujarat Provincial Municipal Corporations Act mandates the registration of all pets, including dogs.

The AMC is currently studying various aspects to design the app effectively. “Cities like Mumbai have made pet dog registration mandatory and have strict provisions for unregistered pets,” the official added.

The official further explained that the pet registration policy is part of the “Rabies Free City Action Plan,” which aims to achieve the central government’s health department target of a rabies-free city by 2030. The policy will clearly define the responsibilities of pet owners.

Sources revealed that the policy might prohibit owners from walking their pet dogs in parks and public places in the city. It may also provide a shelter for impounded pet dogs. As the AMC lacks the manpower to tag pet dogs after registration, arrangements will be made to provide tags in association with the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR).
