| Updated: December 25, 2021 21:54

The state recorded 179 new coronavirus cases and 2 deaths – both in Rajkot – in the last 24 hours, taking the total active cases tally to 837. The state had 98 cases yesterday and 3 deaths.

The deaths were recorded in Ahmedabad city, Jamnagar city and Porbandar. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s medical health official confirmed to Vibes of India that the one death in the city was not of anyone infected with the Omicron variant.

Of the 179 cases, the maximum patients were detected in Ahmedabad city (61), followed by Surat (20), Anand (18), Vadodara city (14), and Rajkot (13). The other districts and cities recorded cases in single digits under 10.

Since the start of the pandemic, the state has recorded 10,113 deaths. 12 patients out of the currently active cases are on ventilator support.

On the Omicron front, the state added six new cases, taking the cumulative tally of those infected by Omicron infection to 49. Vadodara city has the maximum cases (17), followed by Ahmedabad (11), Kheda (5), Anand (4), Jamnagar (3, all discharged), Mehsana (3, all discharged), Surat (2, all discharged), Gandhinagar (1, discharged) and Rajkot (2). With 10 discharges in around a month, the active case tally of those infected with the Omicron variant stands at 39.

Meanwhile, India reported 7,189 fresh coronavirus infections and 387 new fatalities in the last 25 hours, the health ministry data revealed, pushing the national tally to 3,47,79,815 and the total death count to 4,79,520. The active cases stand at 77,032 while the country’s total cases of Omicron, the newest coronavirus variant, has increased to 415.

The Centre has said the Omicron variant is at least thrice more transmissible than the Delta and asked the states and Union Territories to “activate” war rooms, analyze even small trends and surges and take prompt containment action.

State governments have been imposing new restrictions in view of the rising Omicron cases at a time when Christmas and New Year celebrations threaten to exponentially push up the variant’s case count.
